One the most amazing trips in Indonesia. We took a small plane from Jakarta to Wamena in the Baliem Valley in Papua. A true outpost – significantly cooler than Java with a completely different landscape, decidedly untropical and un- Javanese. Wamena sits as the launchpad for many people living and working in central Papua and it has a mix of traditional markets, traditionally dressed men and women (only time I think we will be treated to an outfit of penis gourd teamed with leather jacket – sadly no photo) and gleaming huge government buildings and one empty shopping mall, built with hopes and dreams, that may or may not be realised.
