2018: Tanzania

As part of my work with the Financial Sector Deepening Trust I went on a 2 week trip to Tanzania to do some field research for a focus note on a project that explores ways that people on low incomes can afford insurance, mainly for health. In a country with serious health issues like malaria, TB and digestive issues, it is a big deal for lots of people.

I visited Dar es Salaam, which is both a crazy, noisy, busy city filled with people from everywhere and a beach area, with long, empty stretches. For my work, I visited Moshi on the northern border with Kenya and Mbeya in the south. From Moshi, you can go on safari or visit Mnt Kilimanjaro, but sadly during the rainy season, the animals are spread far and wide and the mountain was covered in clouds. Good Indian food and coffee though. In Mbeya, I stayed in the Utengule Coffee Lodge high up above the Ridge Valley. Beautiful, quiet and unlimited amazing coffee. I took a tour of the plantation and learned what happens from seed to cup.

Great trip that ended with a fantastic dance festival in Dar es Salaam at the Nafasi Art Space. This is an impressive art venue in a disused factory on the edge of town, run by a friendly, visionary team. Loved the mix of contemporary dance that I have seen in London, mixed with African music and choreography.
